# Visiting Mom or Dad for the Holidays? What to Notice and How to Talk About It

By: [Roy Peraza](https://tlcrockford.com/blog/author/roy-peraza)

*Tue, November 03, 2026*

The holidays have a way of bringing everything into focus.

For many families, a holiday visit is the first time in months they've spent more than a phone call's worth of time with an aging parent. You walk through the door expecting the familiar, and most of it is. But sometimes something small catches your eye: a stack of unopened mail, a fridge that looks a little too empty, a story you heard twice in the same afternoon.

If that's happened to you, you're not alone, and noticing isn't the same as overreacting. This guide is meant to help you see clearly, stay calm, and know what to do next, without letting worry take over the holiday.

---

### Take a Gentle Look Around the Home

A home tells you a lot about how someone is managing day to day. While you're helping in the kitchen or sitting in the living room, it's worth paying quiet attention to a few things:

- Mail, bills, or late notices piling up
- Expired or spoiled food, or very little food at all
- Scorched pots and pans, or burners left on
- A home that used to be tidy and now feels cluttered or neglected
- Laundry that hasn't been done, or the same clothes worn day after day
- New dents or scrapes on the car

None of these alone means something is wrong. Together, they can tell you that everyday tasks have become harder than your parent is letting on.

---

### Watch the Everyday Routines

Spending a few full days together gives you a window into routines you'd never see over the phone. Notice how your parent moves through the day.

Are they steady getting up from a chair or managing the stairs? Holding onto walls or furniture for balance? Are medications being taken on schedule, or are pill organizers untouched while bottles run low or stay full? Is personal care, like bathing and grooming, slipping in ways that seem out of character?

These are the details that matter most for safety, and they're often the hardest for an independent parent to admit are becoming difficult.

---

### Listen Closely to the Conversation

Holiday conversations naturally drift through stories, plans, and catching up, which makes them a good time to listen for subtle changes.

You might notice the same story told more than once, confusion about dates or upcoming appointments, or difficulty following a conversation with several people at the table. Pay attention, too, to anything mentioned in passing: a fall they "didn't want to worry you about," a neighbor who has been helping more lately, or a doctor's appointment they missed.

Occasional forgetfulness is part of getting older. Changes that affect safety, routines, or judgment are worth a closer look, and a conversation with their doctor.

---

### Notice Their Mood and Energy

The holidays can be joyful, but they can also highlight loneliness. Does your parent seem more withdrawn, tired, or irritable than usual? Have they lost interest in traditions they used to love, like baking, decorating, or going to services? Do they mention going days without seeing anyone?

Isolation is one of the most common and most overlooked challenges for older adults living alone, especially as winter settles in and getting out becomes harder. It affects health just as much as a fall or a missed medication.

---

### Don't Make the Holiday the Confrontation

When you notice something worrying, it's natural to want to address it right away. But a holiday dinner, with the whole family gathered, is rarely the right setting for a hard conversation. It can leave your parent feeling cornered or embarrassed, and it can overshadow a day that matters to everyone.

Instead, try this:

- **Write down what you see.** Specific notes, with dates, will help later conversations stay grounded and fair.
- **Talk with siblings or other family first.** Compare what each of you has noticed so you're on the same page before talking with your parent.
- **Choose a calm moment.** A quiet morning coffee after the festivities, or a follow-up visit, often goes much better than a crowded table.

Enjoy the time together. Noticing now simply gives you a head start.

---

### How to Start the Conversation

When the time feels right, lead with care and specifics rather than conclusions. Instead of "I don't think you can live alone anymore," try something like, "I noticed a few of your medications didn't look like they'd been taken this week. I want to make sure you're feeling okay." Specific observations are easier to hear and harder to brush off.

Ask questions and listen. Your parent may already have worries they haven't shared. Ask what feels harder than it used to, and what would make life easier.

If you can, involve their doctor. A physician raising a concern takes pressure off the family and adds a trusted voice.

And remember, this is rarely a single conversation. It's the beginning of a dialogue about what a good, safe, and fulfilling life looks like in the years ahead.

### Your Next Step

If what you saw this holiday season has you wondering whether more support might help, our guide, [Is It Time for Assisted Living? Signs Families Should Know](https://tlcrockford.com/blog/timetomovein), walks through the signs in more detail.

And while family is in town, it can be a good time to visit together. Seeing a community in person, sharing a meal, and meeting the people who work there often answers questions that are hard to settle any other way.
